The Medication of Balian

Humans are not like machines that if one component is damaged (diseased) can be repaired and replaced conventionally, but humans are living creatures created by Ida Hyang Widhi Wasa (The God of Hindu believers in Bali) who are also spiritual creatures. Therefore, a holy treatment’s approach should be considered for all medical practitioners, both medical and non-medical.

Balinese believes that our body’s system  must be associated with Panca Maha Bhuta (5 elements that form Bhuana Alit or microcosm and Bhuana Agung or macrocosm) to be considered healthy. Meanwhile the controller of the system is called Tri Dosha (3 elements consist of vatta, air element;  pitta, fire element; and kapha, water element).

According to Lontars or papyrus (palm leaf manuscripts) and Usadha (a holy book about traditional medication), all the diseases and the cures are created by Ida Hyang Widhi Wasa and controlled by His manifestations, Trinity God (Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Iswara). However the treatment in healing the disease is done practically by Balians with the power or gift from Ida Hyang Widhi Wasa.

How do Balians do the treatment to their patients?

In conducting the treatment to their patients, Balians (healers) firstly will check the body’s aura and the eyes’ light of the patients by looking deeply into the eyes of the patients using the power of Dasa Aksara (ten sacred letters), chakra, Kanda Pat (God’s power in human being) and tenung (fortune-telling). 

The treatment system then is continued using Usadha with a variety of approaches, including traditional medicines (tamba) such as; loloh (medicinal herbs), boreh (medicinal cream) and lengis (oil) by Lontar Taru Pramana (a holy book for medication), using any kind of offerings that relate to the tenung and lontar and using sacred letters rerajahan (something with mantras used for specific purpose). In addition to curative treatment, Usadha also contains the system of preventive treatment to prevent evil forces of the disease made by other people, leak (evil force) and  cetik (toxic media). 

According to the elderly of Balinese, a Balian may do different ways in their medications based on their powerful abilities compared to other Balians. It is believed that they got their abilities and power to heal people through various ways. A Balian usually uses several kinds of metal, gemstones, animals and any other odd-shaped physical things found in mysterious ways to heal people. They are believed to be fulfilled with holy spirits.  If the thing used by a Balian is in a form of a gemstone for example, he usually puts the gemstone on the hurt part of the body of the patients or sometimes the gemstone is put in the glass of water and the water will be drunk by the patients as a cure of their diseases. Meanwhile, a Balian who gets their abilities to heal people through a process of trance, usually has a powerful holy soul (Taksu) who gets into the body of Balian itself after he does a meditation. This powerful soul itself will be the one who helps the Balian to heal the diseases of the patients.

In fact, it does not matter how and what it is used by Balians to heal the diseases of the patients. Balinese believes that every disease is created along with its cure and there is nothing in this world that cannot be cured because it is all created and  controlled by Ida Sang Hyang Widhi.
